George é casado com Bess e tem dois filhos: a adolescente Rachel e o garoto Josh. Seu herói é o seu bisavô, e ele decide alugar um ônibus e arrastar a família pelo país, refazendo o mesmo trajeto que o bisavô teria feito muitos anos atrás. A viagem não fazia parte dos sonhos turísticos da turma, que se revolta - incluindo Rachel, que tem que deixar o namoradinho Stock esperando. Eles não imaginam que isso é apenas o início de suas desventuras. Pior, além de ter que aturar o competidor Derek e seus filhos encrenqueiros - o adolescente Wade e o garoto Kyle - George descobrirá que o heroico bisavô não passava de um farsante.
