Em Sem Defesa, David Cardoso é um advogado de sucesso, Luís Torraca, que perdeu sua primeira esposa em um assalto em São Paulo, quando decidiu voltar a morar em Maracaju, desfrutando da tranquilidade de viver no interior. Mas a vida do advogado sofre um grande trauma, quando uma quadrilha procedente do Rio de Janeiro o assalta para seqüestrar seu filho, ele consegue revidar, mata um dos bandidos, o outro sobrevive e é solto e a chefe do bando foge para o Paraguai, mas Luís Torraca é atingido por um disparo que o deixa paraplégico.
