Rachel Carlson é uma famosa escritora de livros de mistério que fica arrasada quando Thomas, seu filho de 7 anos, morre afogado em sua casa em Primrose Hill. Um ano após o acidente ela ainda se sente sem condições de voltar a escrever, apesar de ter recebido um adiantamento de sua editora como forma de incentivo. O casamento dela com Brian também não anda bem, o que faz com que sua amiga Sharon alugue uma cabana em uma pequena e remota vila, para que Rachel possa relaxar. Ela aceita a oferta e aos poucos se adapta à tranquilidade do lugar. Lá Rachel também se envolve com Angus McCulloch, um faroleiro que trabalha e mora em uma ilha deserta próxima à vila. Quando Rachel enfim acredita que possa retornar à sua vida normal ela passa a receber estranhas e ameaçadoras mensagens, supostamente enviadas por seu filho, avisando-a de que corre perigo. Sem saber se as mensagens são reais ou fruto de sua imaginação, ela começa a acreditar que está enlouquecendo.
