Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) é um ambicioso escritor que tenta se firmar no mercado. Há muito tempo ele procura sem sucesso uma grande história para contar, até que decide criar uma sobre alguém real. Clifford procura uma grande editora e diz que foi procurado por Howard Hughes, o excêntrico milionário que todos querem conhecer, para que escreva sua autobiografia. Só que há um problema: ele jamais esteve perto de conhecer Hughes e tudo o que escreveu é uma mentira. Clifford conta com a propalada reclusão de Hughes, que não é visto ou fala em público há mais de uma década, e seu pouco contato com a realidade para manter a farsa. A editora aceita a proposta e publica seu livro, que logo se torna um best-seller. Entretanto para manter as mentiras escritas Clifford precisa inventar outras e, para manter esta situação, precisa contar com a ajuda de seu amigo Dick Susskind (Alfred Molina) e a esposa dele, a artista Edith Irving (Marcia Gay Harden).
