Em 1990, no dia seguinte à posse de Elle como o mais novo presidente da República, a jornalista Mariana, que trabalha para a TV Candango, sofre o primeiro golpe: suas economias são bloqueadas. A repórter arrisca um palpite: “Esse cara não vai dar certo…”. Mariana namora André, que esconde dela sua profissão de piloto particular do doutor Paulo. A mentira dura até o dia que ela o encontra na festa do poderoso. Ao ver as fotos da festa, Mariana flagra André em um papo descontraído com Felícia, que ensina a primeira dama, Ella, a se comportar adequadamente no high society.
