Mário, um bancário e estudante universitário enfrenta, ao mesmo tempo, uma greve no emprego, uma crise pessoal de identidade e a dúvida entre o engajamento político e a ambição de subir na vida. Por isso, ele não consegue se decidir entre duas garotas: Cristina, rica, aparentemente feliz, com seu orgulho e suas teorias de emancipação sexual, e a comerciária Neusa, inexperiente, sensual, insatisfeita, cujo maior desejo é escapar da condição humilde de sua família. Os três, representantes da inquieta juventude moderna, buscam seu lugar ao sol, armando um jogo diabólico no qual as peças são seus corpos ansiosos por amor e aventura.
