O que acontece nos bastidores da última transmissão do programa de rádio mais célebre da América. "A Prairie Home Companion" é apresentado pelo humorista Garrison Keillor, e onde fazem seus números os cowboys-cantores Dusty e Lefty, as Meninas Johnson, uma dupla de estrelas da música country o duo de cantoras-irmãs Rhonda e Yolanda, e uma série de outros artistas que sustentam o espetáculo. Feito ao vivo com plateia num teatro em St. Paul, Minnesota, um show de uma outra época, "A Prairie Home Companion" foi cancelado. Como "o show deve continuar", nos bastidores alguns falam sobre suas vidas e seus planos. Outros estão tentando convencer Lola, a tímida e sombria filha de Yolanda, a cantar neste último show. Enquanto tudo isto acontece, uma mulher misteriosa em um casaco branco que está em uma missão desconhecida vagueia pelo teatro, enquanto o pseudo segurança, Guy Noir, que geralmente não tem nada a fazer em termos de segurança, tenta descobrir quem é a loira.
